Andrew E. Calderón is an associate in the Los Angeles office. Mr. Calderón is a former police officer and member of the firm’s public safety practice group. Mr. Calderón combines his law enforcement experience with his law degree to serve public agencies with a unique perspective and personal understanding of issues related to public safety. Mr. Calderón joined the firm as a summer law clerk and continues his career at the firm specializing in public safety litigation, police advisory work, code enforcement, and other areas concerning municipalities.
Mr. Calderón received his J.D. from UCLA School of Law. While in law school, Mr. Calderón served as a judicial extern for the Honorable George H. Wu of the Central District of California and as a legal extern with the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Central District of California. Mr. Calderón also clerked part-time in the police litigation group of a large civil law firm.
Mr. Calderón graduated magna cum laude from California State University, Long Beach with a B.A. in Spanish.
Prior to law school, Mr. Calderón spent nine years with the Long Beach Police Department. Mr. Calderón’s assignments included patrol, Directed Enforcement Team, and narcotics. As a police officer, Mr. Calderón developed an expertise regarding the distribution of narcotics and gang activity.
While on the police department, Mr. Calderón participated in narcotics investigations at all levels, including street-level sales, wire-tap investigations, and clandestine drug lab investigations. Mr. Calderón led investigations, wrote and executed dozens of search warrants, and regularly testified in state court as an expert witness regarding the distribution of controlled substances.
Mr. Calderón now combines his law enforcement experience with his legal education to provide unique service to public agency clients. Mr. Calderón has a personal understanding of police tactics that enhances his ability to defend public agencies in civil lawsuits. Mr. Calderón also studies emerging issues related to public safety and advises agencies on policies, public records requests, and personnel issues.
Additionally, Mr. Calderón has experience to advise and assist municipalities with marijuana regulation and enforcement. While a narcotics investigator, Mr. Calderón participated in many investigations of marijuana dispensaries and cultivations sites to ensure compliance with local and state laws.
Mr. Calderón also serves as a field artillery officer in the California Army National Guard.
